Laptop With Customer Information Stolen From Bank Print E-mail

Image(CBS 3) PHILADELPHIA A laptop computer containing account information for thousands of customers was stolen from a bank by a man pretending to be with a cleaning crew.

Firstrust Bank in Northeast Philadelphia sent a letter to all of its customers this week, warning of the possibility of identity theft.

The letter stated, “This computer, which was password protected, did contain account information and Social Security Numbers for current and former customers.”

As many as 100-thousand current and former customers’ information and their financial data is said to be on the laptop computer.

Captain Jack McGinnis of Northeast Detectives says investigators are not sure if the suspect intended to steal the information.

Police say the man entered the bank on November Ninth and talked a guard into letting him by security, saying he was with a cleaning crew and heading to the basement. The suspect, carrying an empty box, instead headed up to a fourth-floor office. Less than three minutes later, he left with the computer.

Many Firstrust customers are concerned for the safety of their information and are annoyed that the letters warning them of the theft were not sent out sooner.

“I have no idea how they could have lost it or why they didn’t notify people over the phone as soon as it happened,” said Firstrust customer Ron McMonagle.

Officials say concerned customers should contact their bank and check their credit report for any erroneous expenditures.
